For this family session, we walked through different parts of central Edinburgh and stopped whenever the setting gave us something interesting. Some photographs showed the family within the wider city, while others concentrated more closely on the parents and their two young children.
Their neutral winter clothing worked beautifully against the mixture of grey stone, colourful buildings and festive lights. The children’s red hats also added a small but cheerful touch of colour throughout the gallery.

Victoria Street is a popular part of Edinburgh, so it can become busy. However, this does not mean that every photograph needs to contain a crowd of people.
By choosing positions carefully, working efficiently and waiting for brief gaps, it is possible to create family photographs that still feel relaxed. Some background activity can also help the images retain the atmosphere of exploring a living city.
After creating the photographs we needed there, we continued with the session. This allowed Victoria Street to contribute colour and character without making the complete gallery feel dependent on one location.
Family Photography With Babies and Young Children
Travelling with young children has its own rhythm, and the photography needs to work around that.
I do not expect babies or toddlers to stand still and smile on command throughout the session. Children are naturally curious, particularly when they are exploring somewhere unfamiliar. Giving them room to move and respond to their surroundings usually creates much more genuine expressions.
If a child wants to walk, we can create walking photographs. If they are happiest being held, I can photograph them with their parents. If they become interested in something nearby, that curiosity can become part of the story.

Winter days are much shorter than summer days, so starting time is especially important. In summer, the evening light can continue much later.
