Laura and Fraser’s Edinburgh Engagement Photoshoot

Black-and-white engagement portrait of Laura and Fraser in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town

An engagement photoshoot is an opportunity to slow down, enjoy some time together and create natural photographs before the wedding day.

Laura and Fraser chose central Edinburgh for their engagement session. We explored a mixture of historic streets, sheltered architectural spaces and green parkland, creating a varied gallery without having to travel far across the city.

Their session included photographs around The Vennel, Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh’s Old Town. Each location provided a different atmosphere, from views of Edinburgh Castle to relaxed walking photographs surrounded by greenery.

The result was a personal collection that reflected Laura and Fraser’s relationship and their relaxed style as a couple.

A Relaxed Couples Photoshoot in Edinburgh

Many couples feel slightly nervous when they first stand in front of a professional camera. This is completely normal, especially if they have never arranged a photoshoot together before.

An engagement session should not feel like a long sequence of formal poses. I use simple direction and natural movement to help couples settle into the experience.

Instead of expecting Laura and Fraser to remain still throughout the session, I photographed them as they walked, talked, held hands and explored the city together. We also stopped for a small number of gently directed portraits whenever the surroundings provided a particularly strong background.

This approach created a combination of:

  • Natural walking photographs
  • Relaxed portraits together
  • Close-up photographs and details
  • Wider images showing Edinburgh
  • Quiet moments away from busy streets
  • Black-and-white portraits
  • Photographs with Edinburgh Castle in the background

The aim was to produce photographs that felt like Laura and Fraser rather than forcing them into poses that did not suit their personalities.

Planning Your Own Edinburgh Engagement Photoshoot?

Whether you are celebrating your engagement, preparing for your wedding or simply want natural photographs together, I can help you plan a relaxed session in Edinburgh.

We can choose locations that suit your personalities, from the historic Old Town and Edinburgh Castle views to green spaces such as Princes Street Gardens.

Beginning the Engagement Session at The Vennel

The Vennel is one of Edinburgh’s most recognisable photography locations because of its elevated view towards Edinburgh Castle.

The stone steps, surrounding walls and castle skyline create a setting that immediately identifies the city. It works particularly well for couples who want their engagement photographs to include Edinburgh’s historic character.

For Laura and Fraser, the location provided space for both wider portraits and closer photographs. The castle remained visible in the background while the couple stayed at the centre of the image.

Rather than spending the entire session in one spot, we used The Vennel as one part of a wider route through central Edinburgh. This gave Laura and Fraser the recognisable castle view without making every photograph look the same.

Popular locations can become busy, so flexibility is important. A photographer may need to adjust the angle, wait briefly or use a quieter part of the location while people pass.

The finished photographs can still feel calm and personal even when they are created in the centre of the city.

Engagement Photography Around Edinburgh’s Historic Streets

One of the benefits of arranging an engagement photoshoot in central Edinburgh is the variety available within a relatively compact area.

A short walk can connect historic streets, closes, stone buildings, covered spaces and open views. These changes in surroundings help create a full gallery without requiring several separate journeys.

During Laura and Fraser’s session, Edinburgh’s architecture provided framing and shelter while giving the photographs a distinctive city-centre appearance.

Columns, archways and entrances can be especially useful when the weather changes. They provide interesting light and depth while allowing the couple to step away from the busiest parts of the pavement.

These locations are suitable for:

  • Natural standing portraits
  • Photographs framed by columns or archways
  • Quiet moments between the couple
  • Images showing the movement of the city
  • Shelter during a light rain shower
  • More intimate photographs away from open spaces

Using the existing surroundings means there is no need for complicated props or staged setups. Edinburgh itself becomes part of the story.

Princes Street Gardens Engagement Photography

Princes Street Gardens created a softer and greener part of Laura and Fraser’s engagement gallery.

After photographing among the stone buildings and historic streets, moving into the gardens changed the atmosphere of the session. Trees, pathways and open parkland provided a natural background while keeping us close to the centre of Edinburgh.

Walking photographs work particularly well in this type of setting. Couples have something natural to do, which helps them relax and makes the photography feel less formal.

Laura and Fraser could walk together, talk and enjoy the surroundings while I photographed the interaction between them.

The gardens also allowed us to create:

  • Full-length walking photographs
  • Relaxed portraits beneath the trees
  • Photographs sitting together
  • Close-up details
  • Natural smiles and conversation
  • Images surrounded by seasonal greenery

Combining Edinburgh’s architecture with its parks gave the finished gallery more variety. The photographs still belonged to the same session, but each part had its own character.

Photographing the Small Details

A couples gallery does not need to consist entirely of wide portraits.

Small details can say just as much about the relationship between two people. Hands held together, a look exchanged while walking or a quiet moment sitting beside one another can add intimacy to the finished collection.

During Laura and Fraser’s session, I included close-up photographs alongside the wider Edinburgh views.

These images help balance the gallery. The wider photographs establish the location, while the close details focus entirely on the couple and their connection.

Detail photographs can include:

  • Engagement rings
  • Hands held together
  • Natural expressions
  • Clothing and personal style
  • Small gestures between the couple
  • Candid moments during short breaks

Not every engagement session needs to focus heavily on the ring. The photography can represent the couple as they are, with the engagement forming part of the story rather than becoming the only subject.

Black-and-White Engagement Portraits

Some moments work particularly well in black and white.

Removing colour can draw more attention to expressions, movement and the shapes created by Edinburgh’s architecture. It can also give a busy city-centre photograph a quieter and more timeless quality.

Laura and Fraser’s finished gallery included colour photographs as well as selected black-and-white images.

I decide which photographs may benefit from black-and-white editing as I prepare the gallery. It is not applied to every image automatically. The choice depends on the light, composition, background and emotion of the photograph.

Including both styles gives couples a more varied collection while maintaining a consistent overall appearance.

What Should You Wear for an Edinburgh Engagement Photoshoot?

Laura and Fraser chose relaxed clothing that suited both their personalities and the walking route through Edinburgh.

Their black outfits worked well against the lighter stone architecture and green surroundings, while Laura’s orange skirt introduced a strong colour that helped the couple stand out in the photographs.

You do not need to dress formally unless that reflects your usual style or the type of images you want.

When choosing clothing for an engagement session, consider:

  • Wearing clothes in which you feel comfortable
  • Coordinating colours without dressing identically
  • Choosing footwear suitable for walking
  • Bringing a light jacket for changing weather
  • Avoiding too many large logos or competing patterns
  • Selecting colours that work together
  • Wearing something that reflects your normal style

Comfort is important because engagement sessions often involve walking between several locations. If you feel comfortable, it is much easier to move naturally and concentrate on one another.

Couples can also bring a second jacket or accessory if they want to introduce some variety without changing their complete outfit.

What Happens During an Engagement Session?

Before the photoshoot, we can discuss the type of photographs you prefer and whether there are any locations that are particularly meaningful to you.

Some couples already know exactly where they would like to go. Others want guidance based on the season, the expected weather and the style of scenery they prefer.

At the beginning of the session, I explain what we will do and provide simple direction. We normally start with easy walking photographs, which gives couples time to become accustomed to the camera.

As the session continues, we can move between:

  • Walking and talking
  • Standing portraits
  • Photographs sitting together
  • Wider views of Edinburgh
  • Close-up photographs
  • Natural interaction
  • A few more organised portraits

You do not need to know how to pose. I will guide you when necessary while leaving enough space for genuine interaction.

Is an Engagement Photoshoot Worth Having?

An engagement session provides more than photographs to announce your wedding.

It gives you experience in front of the camera before the wedding day. You can learn how the photographer works, discover what feels comfortable and become more confident about being photographed together.

This can make the couple portrait session on the wedding day feel far more familiar.

An engagement photoshoot can also provide images for:

  • Save-the-date cards
  • Wedding invitations
  • A wedding website
  • Guest books
  • Printed displays at the reception
  • Social media announcements
  • Framed photographs for your home
  • Gifts for parents or grandparents

Most importantly, the photographs record this particular stage of your relationship. They are valuable even when they are not used for wedding stationery or online announcements.

Couples who are still choosing photography for the full celebration can also explore my approach to wedding photography in Edinburgh.

An engagement session can also help you prepare for your wedding photography. For an example of a complete celebration, view Steph and Keith’s Edinburgh City Chambers wedding, which follows their day from the ceremony to the evening party at Summerhall.

Choosing Locations for Your Edinburgh Engagement Photos

The best route depends on the kind of photographs you want.

Some couples prefer historic Edinburgh, with stone streets, closes and castle views. Others would rather use a quiet park, waterside location or an area that has personal meaning.

A central Edinburgh engagement session can combine several types of scenery during one walk. Possible options include:

  • The Vennel
  • Princes Street Gardens
  • The Royal Mile and surrounding Old Town streets
  • Calton Hill
  • Dean Village
  • Circus Lane
  • Victoria Street
  • Holyrood Park
  • Quiet neighbourhood streets
  • A café, park or area connected to your relationship

It is usually better to select a practical route with two or three complementary areas than attempt to visit too many disconnected locations.

Allowing time to walk and interact creates a more relaxed experience and gives each location enough time to contribute something meaningful to the gallery.

Couples who want to see how the city changes during its busiest season can also explore this Edinburgh Fringe vacation photoshoot, photographed among Edinburgh’s recognisable streets and landmarks.

Planning Around Edinburgh Weather

Edinburgh weather can change quickly, but a cloudy or lightly rainy day does not prevent us from creating attractive engagement photographs.

Soft, overcast light can be flattering for portraits and helps avoid strong shadows. Sheltered streets, covered entrances and architectural spaces also give us alternatives when a shower passes through the city.

If rain is expected, it can help to bring:

  • A suitable jacket
  • Comfortable footwear
  • A simple umbrella
  • A small cloth for glasses
  • An additional layer for colder conditions

The session route can be adjusted around the forecast. If the weather becomes unsuitable, we can discuss the available options rather than expecting you to continue in uncomfortable conditions.

Natural Engagement Photography Without Awkward Posing

My engagement photography style combines natural storytelling with gentle direction.

I will not leave you wondering what to do. When a little organisation is needed, I will suggest where to stand, which direction to walk or how to position yourselves in the available light.

Once you are comfortable, the photography becomes more fluid. The best moments often happen between the more organised portraits: a laugh, an exchanged look or a small gesture that occurs naturally.

Laura and Fraser’s photographs show how a session can feel informal while still producing a polished and varied gallery.

The purpose is not to make every couple behave in the same way. It is to create photographs that feel natural to the two people being photographed.

The same relaxed approach can continue into the wedding day, whether you are planning a large celebration or a small and intimate wedding in Edinburgh.
